A GM may "buy out" a player at any time. In order to buy out a player, the GM must post that they are doing so and then put him on his roster but show that he is bought out and the amount that he is paying him.
If you buyout a player in the last 2 months of the season, his buyout will also be in effect the next season. It will count towards your cap from the day you buyout the player during the current season and also apply against your cap in the next season. You may buy out the player and release that player, but he will still count against your cap next year. This is to avoid people buying out players at the end of the season to dump their contract and not have to pay for it at all. (ie...buying a player out the last week and only having that hit your cap for one week)
For example, player A has 3 years and an AAS of $5M. You will buy this player out at $7.5M ($15M x 50%).
Retirement/Injuries:
If your player retires before his contract is up or has a career-ending injury, these rules will apply:
Players 35 and under - No salary Players 36-39 - 35% of salary Players 40-43 - 60% of salary Players 43 and over - 100% of salary Replaced - see below
Meaning that if you signed Player A to a 5 year deal with an AAS of $8M and that player retires at the age of 36, then you would have to pay him $2.8M for the remainder of his contract.
Another option would to just buy out the player. Then the buyout rules would apply.

Players with options on their contract:
If you gave a player a deal with a one year option, it will cost you 10% of that option year to buyout the player. Meaning that if you decline their option, you will pay 10% of that value. At first, I had this at 50% but that did not make sense since it was the same as if the player had an actual salary. Here are some examples:
I buy out Homer Bailey today, his contract is 12: 500K, 13: 500K, 14: 500K (option) I would have to pay 550K to buy out him calculated as follows, 1M in salary times 50% = 500K buyout, option year is 500k times 10%=50K
Now say we are at the end of this year and I decide not to pick up Derek Lowe's option. I would only have to buyout his option because he has not other salary. Therefore I would have to pay a buyout of 50K for the following season to not pick up his contract.
Now this rule does NOT apply to players that have REAL life contracts and REAL life options. Therefore, if I wanted to buyout Ubaldo Jiminez today, I would only buyout his contract and act like I just declined the option years for him

Players with coverage on them:
If a player is bought out with coverage on them, this is how it will be applied.
It will be applied according to how the coverage was set up. Therefore, if a team was covering 80% of the salary, they will be applied 80% of the buyout amount. The other team will have to pay the 20% of the total buyout.
Here is an example:
Player x has a 2 year - 5M salary. Player x had 8M of coverage put on him. The team covering the player x will have a buyout amount of 4M while the team buying out the player will have a buyout amount of 1M.

Players bought out within 3 weeks prior to the buyout deadline will only be allowed to be given 1 year contracts and will not be allowed to be either franchised or RFA tagged.
If a player was in free agency and a team wins him through bidding, they will be subject to the normal contract rules.
Any player won in free agency after the buyout deadline that is over the minor league threshold will only be allowed to be given a 1 year contract and will not be eligible for tagging.

Teams that bid on players that they have bought out will be subject to these rules:
If the team that bought out player bids on that player within the 2 weeks following the buyout that team will only be allowed to give that player a maximum 1 year contract. They also will not be allowed to place a franchise or RFA tag on that player once the season is over. Replaced below
If that player is not bid on by anyone within the 2 weeks following the buyout then that player will be subject to the normal free agency rules.
The time period will start as soon as the buyout is posted. If that player is bid on in FA within 2 weeks, then the rules will apply to the team that bought out the player. For example, team A buys out player X. 13 days later team B bids on that player. Team A waits till day 14 to bid. Even though team A waited 2 weeks to bid that player was bid on within the first 2 weeks and if team A wins that player will be subject to the 1 year contract maximum.

Players that only have 1 year contracts will only apply to this year regardless of when they are bought out. The buyout will not apply to the following year. This does not apply to players that have 1 year contracts with an option attached for the following year.

Players that are bought out during the year and were either franchised or RFA tagged will only be allowed to be given a one year deal and they will not be allowed to be tagged following that one year contract. Franchised or RFA tagged players that are bought out during the off-season will be subject to normal rules. They will be allowed to be given more than one year deals and can be tagged following that contract.

Rules for buying out and bidding on that same player:
Team buying out player can not bid on that player for 1 week unless another team bids on that same player. If another team bids on that player, then buying out team can bid. If the buying out team wins that player within 2 weeks of buying out said player, they will not be able to RFA or franchise tag that player and they can only give that player a 1 year deal.
