Would it be possible to drop the minimum bid for a minor leaguer to 50K rather than 500K. The way I see it, nobody is ever going to bid on a minor leaguer unless he is nearly MLB ready because that is a good amount of money to spend on somebody who may not play for 2+ years.
Then for any players signed under the major league minimum, their contract would automatically jump to the 500K minimum once they become ineligible for the minor league roster.
My reasoning for this idea is because, although right now we all have a ton of "free" minor leaguers, in a year or two, half of them will be either in the majors or considered busts. We will be able to replenish a little bit in the 6 round draft, but that won't be enough to fill the roster. If I have a few empty minor league slots, I may want to take a flyer on some long shot guy in high A who is exceeding expectations, but there is no way in hell anybody is going to lock up 500K to a player like this. Obviously any player who is tearing it up will get bid well over the 50K minimum, but I feel like this would compensate people for doing their homework and taking a shot on a guy. History says most of these guys are going to fail, or be average at best, so once all the free guys start dropping off, the minor league system could lose a lot of luster if we have to dedicate 5M+ just to keep it full.
Just a thought. I will stop ranting now. Let me know what you guys think.

Also, this would keep the concept of the "first major league contract" alive (500K, 1M, 1.5M for first three years). Any minor leaguer who's bid goes over the 500K could be considered a major league contract, ineligible for the 500K contract once he passes the threshold.

I think you make a good point. Maybe we could put it to a league vote?

That is a good idea....we can consider that. Right now I am worried about getting rosters posted. Then I will put this idea up to the league vote.
Thanks for your insight.
