This is what I have come up for players that are FA this year (pujols, fielder, reyes, cuddyer, etc):
We will break these FA up into 3 different grade levels: A, B, C The grade level will be decided by a committee of 3 members of our league. Based on what grade levels, their contracts will assigned accordingly. Owners will have an option to pick a 1 year contract or a 2 year contract. (pondering making a 3 year contract also). However, the more years you choose to assign to that player, the more their average salary will be. I have not decided those numbers yet but it would look something like this:
Type A Free Agent 1 year contract - $12M 2 year contract - $16M 3 year contract - $20M (if this is an option)
Please feel free to give me your ideas about this as it is still being debated.

I'm ok with two year or even three year contracts for this year's free agents. I'm ok with whatever the majority decides on.

I'm not clear on the franchise tags. The rule is $12M per for 3 years. Would this be the case for a guy making $20M already?

Franchise tags are only for players that become FA after the first season. So franchise tags won't apply till next year (2012 FA - 2013 MLB season)

I am really, really disappointed that each persons team votes are not on here, i see that i submitted, and someone else did. It would be good knowing who each person wanted, maybe we could all work out the teams you start with instead of having a draft to determine. One of the posters submitted teams that he obviously wants, and i cant see anyone objecting to either side of the leagues really, if it goes to draft someone else might take his obvious choices.

I kind of like the idea of doing the draft order at random actually. Like Tyler said, there really is no way to do it fairly if two people want the same team. However, if somebody is picking ahead of you that you think might take your team, you could try and work something out with that person. For instance trading spots with them in the other draft or offering them one of the prospects from your farm system of their choice. The randomness adds another element of realism in my opinion.
Just my thoughts.

Yes, I did try to do it the other way so people could get teams they wanted. There were too many managers that had the same teams on their list. That is why I chose to do a random draft order. That is the only way that I could come up with it being fair. I can try again and ask each individual manager if they are willing to take their #2 team instead of their #1. If you guys are willing to do that, then I am sure I can work it out.
The only reason I want to keep it private is b/c I do not want teams to post who they want and then another manager sees that so they say well I kinda wanted that team, so I will post that I want them also.
Also, I did not hear from every manager either which makes it even tougher. I only got a response from some of you guys.
I will be sending an email out as soon as I am done typing this. I am going to try to explain everything there and see if we can work this out.
